GETTING THE BEST OUT OF 3D MODELS AND PDF FILES

A few habits make this process considerably smoother:

  • Download the native format your CAD package prefers. Generally, step files are the most universally supported but x_t or sat may translate more cleanly, depending on your system. We accept most 3D CAD formats.
  • Treat the PDF drawing and the 3D model as complementary, not interchangeable. The PDF carries toleranced dimensions, material callouts and finish notes that a solid model won’t always convey. Use it to confirm what the 3D geometry is telling you.
  • Import at native scale and check units immediately. A model imported in the wrong units will look correct until you try to mate it with something else.
  • Keep the enclosure model as a separate, unmodified reference part in your assembly. If you need to explore a change, work on a copy so you always have the original manufacturer geometry to fall back on.
  • Register early. Like many manufacturers, we require registration before releasing 3D files, so please build that into your project timeline rather than discovering it the day before a design review.
  • When proposing a modification to us, share the updated model alongside a brief written description. It removes ambiguity and speeds up quoting.

None of this replaces a proper design-in conversation with our specialist engineers. But arriving at that point with a verified 3D fit check, rather than a set of assumptions from a 2D drawing, means the discussion starts from confirmed geometry rather than well-intentioned best guesses. For anything beyond a simple standard enclosure, that’s time well spent long before the first metal is cut.
